Nokia Launches the World’s Smallest NMT 450 Phone
September 29, 1997

The Nokia 550 supports the new NMT 450 Plus services

Nokia today introduced a new handset for the NMT 450 standard. The Nokia 550 is the smallest and the lightest NMT 450 phone in the market. In spite of its light weight, the Nokia 550 has superior operating times and many new features. The product is now available in the NMT 450 markets.

The new features of the Nokia 550 include 12 ringing tones, 24 language options, large graphic display with scaleable font size and one-touch voice mail dialing. The user interface of the phone closely resembles that of Nokia’s GSM phones and most of its accessories are compatible with those of Nokia’s GSM products.

The Nokia 550 supports the new NMT 450 Plus features, which include Short Message Service, Real Time Clock, Alarm, Calling Line Identification and the ability to use the international prefix + when storing numbers in the phone memory. The availability of these features is network dependent. The Nokia 550 also has data fax capabilities when used with a PCMCIA card.

“With the Nokia 550, we set a new standard for analogue mobile telephony. Many of the exiting features that digital mobile phone users have found appealing are now also available for the NMT 450 users. With the Nokia 550 users can have the full advantage of new NMT 450 Plus services with operators who provide them”, said Anssi Vanjoki, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe and Africa

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a leader in digital technologies including mobile phones, cellular and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data solutions and multimedia terminals. With sales in approximately 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 39.3 billion ($8.5 billion) in 1996. Nokia employs more than 34,000 people in 45 countries. Nokia's shares are listed in Helsinki, New York, London, Stockholm, Frankfurt and Paris.
