Nokia Wins Major GSM 1800 Deal with VIAG/E2 in Germany

VIAG Interkom, the fourth mobile network operator in Germany, has selected Nokia as the main supplier for the delivery and installation of its Base Station Systems. The contract exceeds 300 MDEM, and ranks among the biggest system agreements of the year. This deal establishes Nokia's position as the leading Base Station System supplier on the European market. This contract covers the first phase of the network roll-out.



The Nokia Base Stations will be delivered and installed over the next 12 months.The VIAG Interkom GSM 1800 network will be operational by mid-1998.

"This strengthens Nokia's position in the fast-growing GSM 1800 market and once again underlines Nokia's position as the world leader in GSM 1800 systems."

VIAG Interkom, a consortium formed by VIAG, BT and Telenor was awarded the GSM 1800 licence in May 1997. The consortium is currently building a new nationwide GSM 1800 network in Germany. The deal also positions Nokia as a key supplier to the global operators, BT and Telenor.

Nokia is the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 systems. Nokia GSM 900 / GSM 1800 systems have been supplied to or ordered by 59 operators in 32 countries.

GSM 1800 is also known as DCS 1800.
