Nokia Continues in Turkey - Now with GSM
August 25, 1997
Telsim Mobil Telekomünikasyon Hizmetleri A.S., the second GSM operator in Turkey, and Nokia Telecommunications have signed an agreement for the delivery of equipment for the extension of Telsim’s GSM network. The total value of the agreement is estimated at around USD 30 million.
As the sole supplier of the transmission equipment and one of two suppliers of the NSS (Network Subsystem) equipment, this is an important first GSM deal for Nokia in Turkey. The agreement includes microwave radios, several MSCs (Mobile Switching Centres) and HLRs (Home Location Register).
“We are happy to have chosen Nokia for this GSM extension to increase network capacity. Nokia’s technically superior MSCs and its leading position in GSM markets around the world will ensure the continued success and growth of Telsim in the Turkish market,” comments Telsim.
Mr. Murat Kircuval, Managing Director, Nokia Telecommunications Turkey, states “As an important first GSM deal for Nokia in Turkey, this agreement further strengthens Nokia’s position in the Turkish market.” Nokia has also for a number of years been responsible for the continuous expansion of Turk Telecom’s, the Turkish PTT's, analogue NMT (Nordic Mobile Telephone) network in Turkey.
Telsim Mobil Telekomünikasyon Hizmetleri A.S., a GSM operator in Turkey since 1994, is owned by the Uzan family. Telsim currently serves around 250,000 subscribers through its GSM network.
