Nokia Breaks Ground for New State-of-the-Art Facility in Melbourne
August 26, 1997
Nokia, the world's second largest manufacturer of mobile phones, today held a ground-breaking ceremony for its new National Service Center in Melbourne. In attendance for the event were the Honorable Dave Weldon (Congressman), John Buckley, (Mayor of Melbourne), Jim Johnson (Airport Director of Melbourne International Airport), Terry Stiles (Chairman and CEO of Stiles Development) and Jeff Devine, Director of Nokia's National Service Center.
Located on airport property near the entrance to the Melbourne International Airport (NASA Blvd., Harris Road and Harry Sutton Road), the new 60,000 square foot site will employ more than 250 people and open in the first quarter of 1998.
The new National Service Center in Melbourne will house Nokia Mobile Phones' after-sales organization and focus on service and repair. Nokia has been present in Melbourne since 1991 with the acquisition of Technophone Corporation. Since 1995, Melbourne has been the location for Nokia's accessory sales and after-sales businesses. With the dedication and expansion of after-sales, accessory sales was transferred to Nokia's sales office in Tampa.
"Our decision to establish the new site was based on Nokia's growth in cellular and wireless phone sales and our desire to provide improved support services for Nokia's business partners in the Americas," said Jeff Devine, Director of Nokia's National Service Center. "This unit will continue to enhance our ability to quickly respond to the needs of our customers and show our long term commitment to the Melbourne community," he said.
Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a leader in digital technologies including mobile phones, cellular and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data solutions and multimedia terminals. With sales in approximately 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 39.3 billion ($8.5 billion) in 1996. Nokia employs more than 34,000 people in 45 countries. Nokia's shares are listed in Helsinki, New York, London, Stockholm, Frankfurt and Paris.
Nokia is the title sponsor of the Nokia Sugar Bowl college football classic held annually in New Orleans.
