Nokia Expands Base Station Production and Product Development in Oulu, Finland
August 27, 1997
Due to increased demand and the technology development of the third generation cellular networks, Nokia is expanding its product development activities and production of base stations in the Oulu area in Finland.
Research and development facilities will be expanded by 8000 m2 and the production space by a total of 10 500 m2 in two factories. Including these expansions, Nokia’s base station production and research areas in Oulu have grown by 25 000 m2 in just two years. The new expansions will offer jobs to 250 people, about 150 of them in research and development. To date, Nokia employs 5000 people in the Oulu area.
“Our decision to expand base station production and research in Oulu was based on the well developed infrastructure, and on the high level of know-how and education in the field of electronics in the area”, states Christian Kurtén, head of Nokia Telecommunications’ Base Stations unit. “In addition to increased production, these expansions will enable us to strengthen our research and product development activities of 3rd generation networks, as well as test production of the new technologies.”
The research work for the third generation cellular network technologies was started in Oulu in 1992. The product development phase will last into the first few years of the next millennium, when the networks will go into commercial use. They will use wideband radio technology and offer a range of new services in a cellular network, such as fast connections to Internet and video-conferencing.
In addition to Oulu, Nokia’s base stations are being produced in Great Britain, the United States, China and Australia.
Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a leader in digital technologies including mobile phones, cellular and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data solutions and multimedia terminals. With sales in approximately 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 39.3 billion ($8.5 billion) in 1996. Nokia employs more than 34,000 people in 45 countries.
