Nokia Telecommunications and Elektrobit Oy Develop New TETRA-Standard Hand-Held Radio
August 29, 1997
Nokia Telecommunications and Elektrobit Oy have jointly developed a new hand-held radio for the global TETRA market. The radio complies with the TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) standard and the first radios will be delivered in October this year.
The further development of the new radio will take place at the Elektrobit Oy premises in Oulu and Tampere, as well as at the Nokia Telecommunications' PMR Terminals unit in Äänekoski, Finland. Nokia is responsible for the manufacturing, global marketing and after sales services of the product.
"Nokia's experience of professional mobile radio systems and digital TETRA technology coupled with Elektrobit's R&D and integration experience of digital cellular systems provides an excellent synergy. This has enabled the launch of a competitive product in a very fast time schedule", says Mr. Eero Halonen, Managing Director of Elektrobit Oy. In addition to the TETRA hand-held radio project, Elektrobit has made long-term investments in the Tetrasim radio channel simulator, which is used in the type testing of TETRA systems.
Mr. Tapio Heikkilä, Vice President, Professional Mobile Radio, Nokia Telecommunications also emphasizes the benefit of the collaboration. "The different high technology know-how of these types of business partnerships are usual in this market. Our partnership with Elektrobit has been successful and the project has succeeded according to our plans."
The TETRA hand-held radio must fulfill the requirements of professionals, as the users will be police, fire brigades and border control guards. The main requirements are long operation time, reliability and ease of use.
The specification of hand-held radios started already in 1994, and usability tests have, for example, been done together with the Oulu University of Technology. The environmental specification of the radios have been studied together with the Technical Research Center of Finland.
Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) is a new open digital trunked radio standard defined by the European Telecommunications Standard Institute ETSI to meet the needs of the most demanding professional mobile radio users such as utility and oil companies, railways and authorities. A large group of European user and manufacturer organizations have participated in the definition of the standard. The TETRA Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was established in December 1994 to create a forum which could act on behalf of all interested parties in TETRA, representing users, manufacturers, operators, test houses and telecom agencies. Today the TETRA MoU represents 65 companies from 18 countries world-wide. The TETRA business is estimated to have 5-10 million users by year 2010.
Elektrobit Oy is a Finnish high technology company with almost 100 employees. Elektrobit Oy is specialized in customer-based development projects. It develops and manufactures telecommunications equipment for both its own customers and as a third party distributor.
Nokia is continuing to develop its TETRA system. Delivery capability will include complete systems encompassing exchanges, base stations, terminals, network management centers and dispatcher stations. Nokia has been developing TETRA for almost 10 years. Nokia has delivered its Actionet trunked radio systems based on the analogue trunking technique to over 30 countries in Europe, Asia and Australia.
Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a leader in digital technologies including mobile phones, cellular and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data solutions and multimedia terminals. With sales in approximately 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 39.3 billion ($8.5 billion) in 1996. Nokia employs more than 34,000 people in 45 countries. Nokia's shares are listed in Helsinki, New York, London, Stockholm, Frankfurt and Paris.
