Nokia Demonstrates Working Digital Terrestrial Receivers
August 29, 1997

Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals (NMNT) was the only manufacturer to show a working prototype of a digital terrestrial decoder at last month's Frequency Allocation conference in Chester, England.

"We were the only manufacturer able to translate the transmission signals broadcast by Castle and NTL outside the event into digital pictures, and we now believe that Nokia's technology is significantly more advanced than that of our competitors'," explains Dr Helmut Stein, senior vice-president, NMNT. "Nokia is now leading the way in developing hardware solutions for the digital terrestrial market, just as we have done for the digital satellite broadcasts by launching the world's first receiver with Common Interface."

The set-top box used by NMNT at the conference was an adapted "Nokia Mediamaster" digital satellite decoder. The satellite (QPSK) front end was removed, and the decoder was interfaced with an external terrestrial (OFDM) front end.

"The reaction we had from leading engineers and transmission companies across the world were very positive; we're looking forward to working with many of them on progressing transmission and hardware technology, adapting our offer for a digital terrestrial future," concludes Dr Helmut Stein.

NMNT, which last year secured an order for 1,000,000 digital satellite decoders from BetaTechnik, a subsidiary of the major German media company Kirch Group, is already working with satellite and terrestrial operator Teracom in Sweden. The UK and Spain will be second to launch digital terrestrial broadcasts after Sweden in 1998. -Ends-
