Nokia Technology Brings the Internet to Europolitan's GSM Customers
July 03, 1997
Europolitan, a Swedish cellular operator, is now providing Internet access to its GSM mobile phone customers, with the use of the NetGate functionality of the Nokia Artus Messaging Platform. This revolutionary technology was introduced earlier this year, and Europolitan is among one of the first operators to implement this system in a GSM network.
Due to the unique functionality of NetGate, Europolitan's customers can today, in a test version of the service, retrieve sports results directly to their GSM phones. A great deal of up-to-date information such as news, sports and tips about information technology, will be available later this year to Europolitan's customers.
Information that can be used is already available on the Internet pages; either created for GSM phone use or on standard web pages. The Nokia Artus Messaging Platform fetches the information requested by the user, formats it into readable text and then sends it back to the phone as a standard GSM short message.
"We have received a large number of suggestions from our customers regarding the kind of information they wish to receive through short message services (SMS). Due to Nokia's solution, much of this information can be retrieved directly from the gigantic flow of information that is the Internet, says Klas Wallström, Customer Relations Manager, Europolitan. "Our goal is to provide people with customer-adjusted mobile solutions regarding speech, text and data. This service is an excellent new addition to our already broad and advanced line of services."
The Nokia Artus Messaging Platform makes use of the Nokia-developed Smart Messaging technology. This technology is a key element of the Wireless Application Protocol, a joint effort of Nokia and other major vendors in the industry. The new protocol will be backward compatible, making the existing Nokia products in this area future-proof.
"The two growing trends in the industry, GSM and Internet, evolved separately at first. Nokia has brought these two together with the Nokia Artus product family and Smart Messaging. The focus is on ease-of-use for the end user, and easy and quick service creation for the operator", says Pekka Pohjakallio, Product Manager, Nokia Telecommunications. "Innovative operators like Europolitan will lead the way in the growth of wireless data. Another driving force is open protocols, such as the Wireless Application Protocol."
