New 17-Inch Mini-Neck Monitor Proves that "Less is More"
July 07, 1997

Nokia Display Products, Inc., a leading manufacturer of high-quality display and audio technologies, today announced the availability of the 447Za, the newest star in Nokia’s popular, 17-inch Multigraph series.

Sporting a new design and improved integrated sound, the 17-inch Multigraph 447Za (actual viewing area of 16”), is a blend of state-of-the-art technology, multimedia features and emissions that meet the TCO’95 standard for safe use in the office or home. New cabinet styling minimizes monitor footprint and saves desk space, yet the 447Za provides the largest viewing area (16 inches) of any 17-inch Nokia monitor. The mini-neck flatscreen picture tube ensures improved focus, lower energy consumption and less heat development, fulfilling the highest ergonomic requirements. Once again, Nokia extends its tradition of assuming a product leadership role by developing a monitor that is capable of outlasting several generations of computing power.

One of the most important features of the new 447Za is the impressive reduction in power consumption. “Typically, most 17-inch monitors use about 140 watts,” explains Jan Nylund, Product Manager for Nokia Display Products, “and the new 447Za only uses 70% of that, or less than 100 watts.” Another important aspect of this reduction in power usage is the reduced need for cooling the air. “Most of the energy used by a monitor is dissipated as heat,” says Nylund. “When a monitor produces less heat, it requires less energy to cool the surrounding air.” Thus, the power reduction is translated into dollar-savings – particularly for a large company with many computer workstations – where energy costs can be reduced significantly.

With a screen refresh rate of 90 Hz, the Multigraph 447Za offers an optimal resolution of 1024 x 768. It is capable of a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz, and has a horizontal frequency range from 31 to 72 kHz. Plug-and-play support for Windows 95 applications is in compliance with DDC Level 1/2AB.

The Business Sound System offers an integrated audio amplifier with a pair of 5-watt speakers, fixed directional microphone, two RCA stereo inputs, and headphone and external microphone connectors.

The Multigraph 447Za will be available in the third quarter of 1997 from Nokia resellers and distributors at an Estimated Street Price of US $649. The rich range of features rival many higher-priced monitors, and include:
Invar Shadow Mask with .27 mm dot pitch
Complies with the latest VESA standard for high refresh rates
Full range of easy-to-use digital controls
TCO’95 certified
Windows ’95 Plug ‘N Play
Windows, Macintosh and UNIX compatible

Quality, innovation and user-friendliness form the core of the Nokia brand, according to Seppo Sutela, Vice President of International Sales and Marketing with Nokia Display Products. “Nokia monitors are upgrade products. They have the features the performance-user wants today and will want tomorrow,” says Sutela. The pioneering picture and sound quality of Nokia monitors is the result of consistent investment in research and development. With a strong focus on ergonomics, integration and innovation, all Nokia monitors meet or exceed the strict radiation protection regulations of the MPR II and TCO 92/95 standards, as well as the power-saving requirements of VESA.
