Nokia Joins Internet Mail Consortium

Nokia, a world leading telecommunications company, has joined the Internet Mail Consortium (IMC). The IMC is an international organisation focused on managing and promoting the rapidly expanding world of electronic mail on the Internet. The goal of the IMC is to expand the role of mail in Internet into new arenas, such as commerce and entertainment and to help new user groups utilise this communications medium in the best possibly way.
Nokia is the world’s leading manufacturer of wireless data products. In 1994, the company launched the world’s first digital data card, the Nokia Cellular Data Card. The Nokia 9000 Communicator, the world’s first integrated communication device, was launched in 1996. A combination of digital mobile phone and palmtop computer, the Nokia 9000 Communicator enables the users receive and send e-mails, faxes, short messages and access corporate data files and the Internet.
When developing our products it is vital for us to be a member of the consortium where the Internet mail technologies are developed and implemented. For example, the Nokia 9000 Communicator provides access to the Internet and Intranet messaging systems by utilising Internet mail technologies and standards, says Mikko Terho, Vice President, Wireless Data, Nokia Mobile Phones.
The Internet Mail Consortium is an industry organisation consisting of primarily Internet mail world wide software vendors. Other members include hardware vendors who sell Internet mail servers, companies and on-line services who have Internet mail gateways, and other similar companies in the Internet mail market.
