Globe Telecom Continues with Nokia for Fourth GSM Network Expansion

Globe Telecom and Nokia have signed an agreement for a major expansion of Globe's GSM network capacity and coverage. Under the contract, Nokia will supply DX 200 mobile switch upgrades and base stations, including the compact Nokia PrimeSite. Also included in the agreement is the supply of Nokia’s microwave radios for base station access.
Nokia also supplied phases one, two and three of Globe Telecom's GSM network in the Philippines.
Mr Gerardo Ablaza, Executive Vice-President of Globe Telecom, said, "We are continuing our roll-out nationwide and introducing leading edge services. Globe is pleased to be able to award this contract to Nokia. This will ensure that we meet our objective of providing the very best in quality, security and service."
Mr Stephan Granroth, General Manager of Nokia (Philippines), Inc., said, "Nokia is pleased to continue the long term co-operation with Globe Telecom. The implementation of the contract will further enhance Globe’s competitiveness in the demanding telecommunications market in the Philippines."
Globe Telecom is one of the major full telecom service providers in the Philippines, operating both cellular and fixed networks. The Handyphone network is the biggest digital cellular network in the country. The main share holders of Globe Telecom are Ayala Corp. and Singapore Telecom.
Nokia, a forerunner in digital mobile phones is one of the two largest suppliers of GSM networks and has sales in approximately 130 countries. Nokia is also a global leader in wireless data. With net sales totalling USD 8.5 billion in 1996, Nokia employs over 33 000 people in 45 countries.
Nokia's GSM technology has been delivered to 58 operators in 32 countries.
