Nokia Expands Zhejiang GSM Network in China
July 31, 1997
Nokia and Zhejiang Post and Telecommunications Administration, China, have signed agreements for the third phase expansion of the Zhejiang GSM 900 network in China. The total contract value is approximately USD 80 million and deliveries are due to begin in the near future. With the increased capacity provided by this expansion, the Nokia-supplied system could accommodate more than 1 million subscribers.
Nokia will deliver high capacity mobile switching centres and home location registers, state-of-the-art base station controllers and base stations and a comprehensive network management system. The agreement also includes expansions to the existing network elements. In addition, Nokia will also be supplying services for integration, commissioning, training and network planning to Zhejiang PTA. The expansion will cover three main areas in Zhejiang Province; Taizhou, Wenzhou and Ningbo.
Nokia and Zhejiang PTA began their co-operation in 1995 with the signing of an agreement for the provision of a complete GSM infrastructure for the first phase of the network build. Nokia has also provided its high capacity solution, Intelligent Underlay Overlay, to Zhejiang PTA. The Nokia IUO solution has enabled Zhejiang PTA to dramatically increase the capacity of the radio network with the existing sites as well as improving network quality. It has also allowed them to reduce the need for additional sites, thus reducing costs.
