Nokia GSM 1900 Infrastructure And Handsets Are Foundation Of Aerial Communications’ PCS Launch In Tampa, Florida
June 23, 1997

Nokia, the world’s second largest supplier of GSM-based digital wireless networks and the world’s leading manufacturer of digital phones, announced that its total system solution, including switching equipment, for commercial PCS will come on-line today in Tampa, Florida. The all-digital GSM 1900 system is owned and operated by Chicago-based Aerial Communications. Nokia also supplies digital GSM handsets to Aerial.

When the network build-out is completed later this year, Aerial Communications will provide service to approximately 80 percent of the population throughout its Major Trading Area (MTA), which comprises 20 counties in central Florida extending out from the Greater Tampa Bay area.

The Aerial Communications launch is an important milestone in Nokia’s continued global leadership in GSM-based PCS system solutions. Nokia supplies GSM-based systems to 58 operators in 32 countries, including Western Wireless in the United States.

“The rapid growth in mobile communications exemplifies the high value people place on the ability to communicate anytime, anywhere,” said Jyrki Salo, president of Nokia's infrastructure business group in the Americas. “Aerial’s subscribers will benefit from the enhanced services inherent in Nokia’s all-digital network, designed around the belief that customers know what features they want and how much they're willing to pay for them. Nokia delivers proven GSM features for both voice and messaging, such as multi-party conference calling and short message service.”

In 1996, Nokia was selected as the sole infrastructure supplier for the initial build-out of Aerial’s PCS network. Nokia’s leading radio and switching technology and its dedicated engineering implementation teams led to the deployment of the commercial system in less than one year from the time the initial contract was signed. Nokia supplied Aerial with a complete GSM 1900 network, including switching centers, base stations, base station controllers and short messaging systems.

Finland-based Nokia is a global telecommunications company with 1996 net sales of $8.5 billion. Nokia is Europe’s largest manufacturer of mobile telephones, the world market leader in digital phones, a pioneer in digital switching and wireless communications, and a significant supplier of advanced access systems, including home terminals. Nokia shares are traded in the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol NOKA. The shares are also traded in Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Paris and Frankfurt.

Nokia is the title sponsor of the Nokia Sugar Bowl college football classic held annually in New Orleans.
