June 19, 1997

Nokia Telecommunications has been chosen to be the main Base Station Subsystem supplier for the third phase expansion of China Unicom Shanghai Branch’s GSM network expansion in China. The contract further strengthens Nokia's position as a leading GSM supplier to the fast-growing China telecommunications market.

Nokia will supply state-of-the-art Base Station Controllers, Base Stations, as well as compact Nokia PrimeSite Base Stations, enabling operators to increase network coverage and capacity. Nokia will also provide services, including network planning and installation. The total contract value is approximately USD 10 million.

Nokia signed a deal with China Unicom in 1995, for the delivery of the second phase of its GSM network in Shanghai. This included the supply of a total Base Station Subsystem.

After the third phase expansion, the network will have capacity for a total of 150,000 subscribers in Shanghai.

Nokia Telecommunications develops and manufactures infrastructure equipment and systems for cellular and fixed networks. Nokia is the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest suppliers of GSM 900, as well as being a market leader in mobile data infrastructure. In the fast growing area of access networks, Nokia Telecommunications is a significant supplier of advanced transmission and switching solutions. Nokia also provides operators with comprehensive support in building, operating and developing both cellular and fixed networks.

Nokia's GSM technology has been delivered to 58 operators in 32 countries.
