Nokia Wins New GSM 1800 Customer in Greece - Cosmote Orders a Full Turn-key System
June 19, 1997
Nokia Telecommunications and Cosmote, a joint venture between the Greek PTT, OTE, and Telenor of Norway, have today signed a letter of intent for the supply of a complete GSM 1800 turn-key system. The value of the contract is approximately 100 million ECUs and covers deliveries for the next two years. Nokia is the sole GSM network supplier to Cosmote. This is a significant deal for Nokia, being the first GSM system deal in Greece.
The complete network solution will include the supply of high capacity mobile switching centres, Nokia base station subsystems, as well as a number of the extremely compact Nokia PrimeSite base stations, enabling operators to build effective network coverage. The contract will also include delivery of a range of Nokia's reliable Microwave Radio solutions. In addition, installation and commissioning services will be supplied to Cosmote by Nokia. The network will be fully operational by the end of this year.
As Cosmote explain, "We have very ambitious targets for our GSM network and to meet these targets, we need to have a high-quality network which will be implemented within a very demanding time-frame. We are confident in our choice of Nokia as supplier, due to their impressive track record in GSM technology as well as their leadership position in GSM 1800."
The first phase of the Cosmote network will provide services for the country's two largest cities of Athens and Thessaloniki as well as the area of Patra. This represents major demands in terms of capacity and coverage for the GSM network. Nokia's innovative solutions will provide an optimal network build for Cosmote, meeting the demands posed for high capacity and wide coverage.
Cosmote is a new mobile operator, having won the GSM 1800 licence at the end of 1995. The joint venture consists of a 70% shareholding by OTE and a 30% holding by Telenor, the Norwegian mobile operator. Nokia has been delivering GSM system solutions to Telenor since 1994.
Nokia Telecommunications develops and manufactures infrastructure equipment and systems for cellular and fixed networks. Nokia is the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest suppliers in GSM 900, as well as being a market leader in mobile data infrastructure.
Nokia also provides operators with comprehensive support in building, operating and developing both cellular and fixed networks. Nokia's GSM technology has been delivered to 58 operators in 32 countries.
