Nokia Continues to Supply SDH Solutions to TAC, Thailand
June 11, 1997

Total Access Communications (TAC), a member of the UCOM group of Thailand, and Nokia have signed an agreement for the supply of Nokia's SDH (Synchronised Digital Hierarchy) fibre optic transmission product, SYNFONET and network management system, for the third phase of TAC's network build. Nokia will also provide implementation and technical support services to TAC. The value of the contract exceeds USD 30 million.

TAC is a leading wireless communications company in Thailand operating AMPS, GSM1800, and trunking networks with the total number of customers exceeding 800,000. In addition to supporting TAC’s mobile networks, the new expansion will extend TAC’s service provision to include corporate communications services such as managed leased lines.

"The Nokia SYNFONET solution is the right choice for our SDH needs" stated Mr. Winai Pumsri Vice President of TAC. "We have been very pleased with the well managed and timely implementation of the SDH system so far. Because of its modular architecture Nokia SYNFONET equipment gives us the flexibility we need and has proven to be been both reliable and easy to install - key factors when we are building networks fast in a very dynamic environment."

“This contract further strengthens the long and close partnership between TAC and Nokia” comments Mr. Pekka Mielonen, General Manager, Nokia Telecommunications, Thailand.

"We are delighted that TAC has selected Nokia to supply SYNFONET to continue their network build. The rapid growth of TAC's networks means that they must have the right backbone system both for today and for the services they will offer in the future." said Kari Suneli, Senior Vice President of Nokia Fixed Access Systems. "With the Nokia SYNFONET product family, operators who face sporadic and unpredictable network growth, are assured of being able to build their network as they grow. This fact is already proven in TAC's phased network build."
