Nokia to Supply a Fixed Wireless Solution for Globe Telecom Phone Project in the Philippines
June 11, 1997

Nokia has been selected by Globe Telecom to supply a wireless solution for their fixed telephone project in the Philippines. Nokia will supply infrastructure equipment and Nokia PremiCell wireless local loop (WLL) subscriber terminals for the initial phase of WLL technology trial applications in parts of Globe Telecom service areas in Cavite and Batangas in Southern Luzon.

Today, Globe Telecom is aggressively laying a fully digital fixed telephone infrastructure that makes use of both fixed and wireless technologies. The use of WLL is expected to greatly accelerate the roll-out in areas where the use of wireless technology instead of copper cables would lead to faster line deployment.

“Nokia’s Wireless Local Loop is an optimised solution for us. In addition to voice services it can offer fax and data facilities, which are extremely important for business and corporate customers”, explains Atty Rodolfo Salalima, Globe Telecom Vice President.

“Nokia’s Wireless Local Loop solution, based on GSM technology, enables operators to rapidly offer service to their customers and set up a network that can be expanded as the number of subscribers grows. In addition to Nokia PremiCell terminals that are connected to a standard telephone, mobile handsets with limited mobility or Nokia Wireless Payphones can be used to provide the service for end users” says Mr. Stephan Granroth, General Manager, Nokia (Philippines), Inc.

Globe Telecom is the Philippine venture firm between the Ayala Corporation and Singapore Telecom International (STI). Having already been granted previous government permits for nationwide mobile telephony and international gateway services, Globe Telecom is now installing 700,000 fixed telephone lines in areas of Metro Manila, Southern Luzon and Mindanao. These fixed lines are in addition to existing Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSAT), international private leased lines, data communications, as well as G-Net Internet access, Globe's dial-up internet access, and other value-added network services.
