Nokia Sponsors New Sci-Fi Book - Offering a Window to the Future
June 10, 1997
"The millennium of total mobility," predicts Arthur C. Clarke
Nokia, in conjunction with Horizon Houseâ Publications, has published a science fiction book entitled "Future Histories". With forewords from Arthur C. Clarke and Nicholas Negroponte, some of today's leading science fiction writers have given their own perspectives for the communication worlds of tomorrow. Topics range from practical concepts like intelligent internets and wireless identity cards to more amazing ideas like wormholes in cyberspace and geo-consciousness. An article highlighting Nokia's own views on the future of communications is also featured.
"This book is about the future, about what may happen and what may take place, especially in the world of communications. It is not about predictions, since we cannot know the future, but it is about perspectives..." states editor of the book, Stephen McClelland in his foreword.
As Lauri Kivinen, Senior Vice President, Nokia Corporate Communications explains, the book offers a window to the future. "The idea of sponsoring "Future Histories", a truly visionary project, was very appealing to Nokia. Although these are works of fiction, some of the ideas could become reality some time in the future. For example, with the invention of the telephone in 1876, who could have foreseen that the very same concept could connect people to the Internet while they are on the move, before the year 2000? This is a reality with Nokia's products today."
The book acts primarily as a business gift and will not be on sale to the public.
Nokia is the world's largest manufacturer of digital mobile phones and one of the two largest suppliers of GSM networks with sales in approximately 130 countries. Nokia is also a global leader in wireless data. With net sales totaling USD 8.5 billion in 1996, Nokia employs over 33 000 people in 45 countries. Nokia´s shares are listed on the Helsinki, New York, London, Stockholm, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges.
