Nokia Easywave Access - A Wireless Local Loop Solution Linking GSM to the Local Exchange
June 10, 1997
Nokia is the first supplier on the market to link GSM radio access to a wireline local exchange. This enables wireline operators implementing a wireless access network to benefit from GSM, the most established digital cellular technology. GSM gives operators a powerful service set, and enables them to offer neighbourhood mobility as an option.
The new versatile network element - the Nokia DAXnode 5000 WLL
A new access node, the DAXnode 5000 WLL, forms the link between a GSM radio network and the local exchange. It adapts GSM signalling to wireline signalling, controls the base station network and takes care of authentication and terminal identification. It also converts GSM data to fixed network data. It is interfaced by V5 to the local exchange and by A-bis interface to the base stations.
The maximum capacity of one DAXnode is 5000 subscribers or 720 radio channels.
Neighbourhood mobility now possible with a wireline exchange
Basic service and wireline operators will find Nokia’s Easywave Access solution suitable to their needs. This solution can offer mobility within the neighbourhood of the subscriber’s premises. Instead of using a fixed subscriber terminal, end users will have a mobile phone covering an area from one block to a whole town area. Mobility as an option will help operators to create new, innovative service packages and therefore generate additional revenue.
Wireline connection for a flexible network access
To ensure flexible and cost-effective network expansion, wireline subscribers can also be connected to the DAXnode 5000 WLL. Operators may want to build initial coverage by radio access and later build copper or fibre connections to city hot-spots and to business users requiring high speed data.
Nokia testing wireless access with Oulu Telephone company in Finland
Nokia is testing the wireless access together with Oulu Telephone company, a regional network operator in northern Finland. Nokia’s DAXnode 5000 WLL is connected to their local exchange and a few GSM 1800 base stations are operating in the area. Subscribers either have the Nokia PremiCell wireless terminal or are using mobile handsets allowing them to move within an area of a few kilometres around their house.
