June 09, 1997

Partnership With SingTel Mobile and SingTel Payphone Provides First GSM Wireless Card Payphone Service in Singapore.

Nokia, the market leader in digital handsets and largest manufacturer of wireless smart card payphones, in partnership with SingTel Mobile and SingTel Payphone Division, demonstrates the flexibility of temporary installations with the provision of Nokia wireless payphones at Asia TELECOM '97. This joint initiative to provide a GSM Wireless Card Payphone service is the first of its kind in Singapore.

These GSM-based integrated wireless payphones use smart debit phonecard as method of payment. Provided by SingTel Mobile, these phonecards are distributed to all delegates to allow easy communication using any of the Nokia wireless payphones installed throughout the exhibition halls for the duration of the exhibition. The cellular service platform utilises SingTel Mobile’s established GSM 900 network.

The Nokia wireless payphones is the first integrated cellular payphone introduced into the Singapore market. Mr Lee Sai Hong, General Manager, SingTel Payphone, said, “With the initial purchase of 50 such units, SingTel Payphone Division has the flexibility of providing payphones where fixed lines are not provided. It also allows us to move into providing a premium service for mobile users in taxis, trains, limousines and coaster cruisers”. Mr Lee added that, “Its compact design, large graphical display, handsfree functionality and simple operations for the users were among the key features that made SingTel Payphones choose Nokia wireless payphones.”

"Since its introduction to the market in 1996, Nokia Wireless Payphones have been commercially very well-received by customers worldwide. It was designed for easy installation for vehicular and mobile locations. Besides offering flexibility and a cost-effective alternative in temporary fixed installations, Nokia payphones allow for public payphone installations in new applications. Payphone services can also be customized to meet varying operator needs." said Juha Reima, Managing Director / Vice-President of Sales and Marketing, Nokia Mobile Phone (SEA) Pte Ltd.

The new wireless payphones can be operated either stand-alone or by utilizing Nokia’s wireless payphone management system, a software system that supports the maintenance and operation of Nokia wireless payphones. In addition to providing statistical information on usage, and the contribution of each payphone, the terminals can be controlled or monitored to prevent fraudulent usage and vandalism.
