Nokia and Ipsilon Announce Broadband Technology Collaboration
June 03, 1997

Nokia today announced that it has reached an agreement with Ipsilon Networks, Inc. of Sunnyvale, CA. for the two companies to collaborate on the development of broadband technologies, primarily for telecommunications providers. Coupled with this announcement, Nokia stated that it had made a minority investment in Ipsilon. The two companies are co-operating on technology development for IP/ATM networks, with cut-through IP switching models. This technology focuses particularly on traffic and cost optimization in future broadband services networks for multimedia.

“Ipsilon’s early development experience in the area of cut-through IP switching, coupled with Nokia’s understanding of service networks, will enable Nokia’s faster time-to-market in the key technology area of IP/ATM.” said Tero Laaksonen, head of Nokia’s Information Networking Systems division. “This co-operation with Ipsilon further demonstrates Nokia’s openness to working with partners to develop new technologies.” Laaksonen continues, “Commitment to standards in IP/ATM technology is a long-term strategy for Nokia and will be important in the development work with Ipsilon.”

Nokia also intends to pursue similar activities with other existing and new technology partners to speed the development of broadband technologies targeted for telecommunications service providers.

“Nokia’s long history of leadership in telecommunications technology, and their global presence, make them a very attractive partner for Ipsilon,” said Brian NeSmith, Ipsilon president and CEO. “When we launched the company a year ago, we focused on the benefits of our products in the US and Pacific Rim marketplaces. Over the last 6 months, we’ve been successful in providing Ipsilon solutions to the European Community. Nokia’s strong reputation among global telecommunications providers will help raise our visibility in the European and Asia-Pacific markets, and their engineering leadership will help us develop and fine-tune our technologies to better address the needs of highly demanding telecommunications environments.”

Founded in October 1994 and based in Sunnyvale, CA, Ipsilon Networks, Inc. is the premier provider of high performance IP switches, designed to accelerate today’s IP networks to 21st-century throughout. Ipsilon’s flagship product, the IP Switch ATM 1600, won the prestigious Grand Winner Best of Show award at the Spring 1996 NetWorld+Interop, was named one of the Most Important Products of 1996 Information Week, and captured 1997 Hot Product honors from Data Communications. To date, Ipsilon’s IP Switching protocols have been endorsed and implemented by more than 30 of the leading networking equipment vendors.
