Nokia Supplies GSM and NMT Network Expansions to AIS in Thailand
April 22, 1997
Advanced Info Service (AIS) of Thailand and Nokia have signed an agreement for turn-key expansions of the AIS’ GSM and NMT cellular networks. The frame agreement signed will cover the supplies over the period of three years. The value of first year deliveries is estimated to be over USD 110 million.
Nokia will deliver to AIS switches, base station controllers and base stations and network management systems. In addition to that, the agreement covers site survey and preparation, network planning, implementation, network optimization and operation and maintenance services. Deliveries will start immediately.
Advanced Info Service's GSM and NMT services have been in operation for 3 and 7 years, respectively. Both networks have nationwide coverage, and together they have over 900,000 subscribers.
"To further develop our network across Thailand, we look forward to continuing the co-operation with Nokia, who has shown that their NMT and GSM products are world class. This will help AIS meet its business objectives and bring mutual success to AIS and Nokia”, says Mr. Somprasong Boonyachai, Vice Chairman of Wireless Communications, Shinawatra Group.
“We are very pleased to continue the long-term partnership with AIS of Shinawatra Group that started in 1990 with NMT 900 network deliveries. Nokia is also pleased of the confidence AIS is showing towards Nokia's products and services in this highly competitive situation. Nokia provides its operator customers with network solutions that offer high quality services to end users. This contract with AIS further strengthens our ability to offer good local customer service and support to our customers in the very competitive Thai market." says Mr. Heikki Kasko, Managing Director, Nokia Telecommunications (Thailand) Ltd.
