Nokia and Oracle Offer Wireless Internet Solutions for GSM Environment
April 07, 1997

Nokia and Oracle Corp. today announced at Oracle Open World (OOW) congress in Vienna that they have joined forces to bring unified messaging solutions to the GSM market place. Users can now access voice, fax, e-mail and Internet services over digital GSM network by combining Oracle InterOffice and Oracle WebServer with Nokia developed Smart Messaging concept, the Nokia Artus NetGate server and sophisticated Nokia digital phones.

Oracle and Nokia gave a live demonstration of their solution at Oracle’s main booth at OOW in Vienna. The demo featured a prototype unified messaging service developed by Telia AB, the Swedish telecommunications company. By integrating the messaging functionality of Oracle InterOffice, a Web-based collaboration software, into Telia’s GSM network, customers will be able to access complete voice, fax, e-mail and Internet services using their GSM handsets or any other Web-enabled device. Using the industry-standard APIs supported by Oracle InterOffice and Oracle WebServer in this demonstration, the Telia system was integrated with Nokia’s wireless access technologies to provide a seamless solution.

The Nokia technologies feature the Smart Messaging concept, a Nokia-proposed open specification combining Internet and a GSM phone in a seamless manner. The solution by Nokia and Oracle gives the users access to Internet directly from any Nokia GSM phone with SMS (Short Message Service) capability by using the Nokia Artus NetGate server. The messaging service is also supported by the Nokia 9000 Communicator and other Nokia wireless data products, such as data cards.

According to Nokia and Oracle the cooperation matches well with the changing requirements of the telecommunication market. "The emphasis in cellular networks is shifting from voice-only communication towards rapidly growing data services such as access to Internet. As such, unified messaging services are becoming of paramount of importance to network operators. With Smart Messaging, Internet and GSM can be integrated. Therefore it is clear that a close interaction is required between telecommunications equipment vendors, software vendors, and operators to deliver such services," notes Ilkka Raiskinen, General Manager, Wireless Data, Nokia Mobile Phones.

Oracle Corporation is the world's leading supplier of software for information management, and the world's second largest software company. With annual revenues exceeding $5.2 billion, the company offers its database, tools and application products, along with related consulting, education and support services, in more than 90 countries around the world.
