Nokia Wins Redstone’s New Fixed Switching Business in the UK
April 02, 1997
Nokia and Redstone Network Services Limited in the UK have signed an agreement on the delivery of Nokia's DX 200 switching systems to Redstone's network. The agreement includes provision initially of two digital multi-purpose telephone exchanges and a comprehensive five year maintenance support framework.
The first switch is due to be operational in the very near future and the second switch will be added to Redstone’s network later in 1997. They will enhance the existing service portfolio and support Redstone’s plans to launch a range of exciting new services throughout 1997 and beyond.
"Nokia is especially pleased to be associated with Redstone as a foremost example of the new brand of telecommunications network operator, offering exciting new choices for the residential and business user. The deal also marks an important first milestone for Nokia as it develops its fixed switching business in new UK markets, building upon its success in the UK cable industry. Nokia has delivered over 1 million lines to UK to date", according to Peter Kuhne, Managing Director for Nokia Telecommunications, UK.
"We chose Nokia because we were impressed by the quality of Nokia’s service and the flexibility and high standard of their approach. The complete solution offered by Nokia was technically and commercially superior to all other options considered." said Simon Thomas, Operations Director of Redstone Network Services.
Redstone’s existing "Callsure" range of services enables customers to divert their calls to any fixed or mobile in the UK allowing them to be reached directly on just one number. As a new operator in the UK, Redstone Network Services is looking to add value-added services in the network, aiming at attractive niche segments in the competitive UK telephony market. Redstone will also be expanding its product to include freephone and premium rate telephone services for both the residential and corporate markets.
Nokia has successfully entered the European deregulated markets with its DX 200 technology in fixed switching and since entering the UK cable market in 1989, Nokia has gained a leading position as a supplier to cable operators, both in transmission and switching. Nokia is an international telecommunications group with net sales of USD 8.5 billion in 1996 and has 31,000 employees worldwide. Nokia's fixed switching applications are based on the same DX 200 technology as its highly successful cellular switching applications.
Redstone Network Services was incorporated on February 14th 1995 and was subsequently granted a ten year licence from the Department of Trade and Industry to operate a public telephone network in the UK. The Redstone Management team has extensive experience of the UK Telecoms market, gained at a senior level in the major UK PTO’s including BT, Vodafone, Cellnet and Mercury One-2-One.
