Ultimate Style and Ease of Use for Asia Pacific Consumers -Nokia Introduces the Nokia 3810 - the First Specially Made-For-Asia Mobile Phone
March 20, 1997
Nokia today launched the first specially made for Asia cellular phone -- the distinctive Nokia 3810. The new GSM handportable is the first phone designed from the ground up with the requirements and input of Asia Pacific consumers as the base. Designed to offer ultimate ease of use for Asian end-user, the phone offers true one hand operation, Asian language user interface and Asian SMS. The exciting new product will be available in volume across Asia Pacific from July.
- With the Nokia 3810, we have successfully addressed the specific needs of the increasingly important, challenging and diverse Asia Pacific market and the demanding Asian consumer. We undertook quantitative research in the Asia Pacific markets and interviewed targeted consumers. The valuable input was carefully collated and formed the basis of the product specification of the Nokia 3810. The Nokia 3810 is undoubtedly the phone made for consumers in Asia Pacific, says Nigel Litchfield, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Asia Pacific.
The Nokia 3810 is a small and compact phone with a large display. The large full graphics display of the Nokia 3810 features a dynamic font size that adjusts automatically for best viewing based on the number of digits on the screen. The special “jumbo font” mode allows easy reading and clarity at an arm’s length.
Commenting on the most significant features of the Nokia 3810 which best reflect the Asian end-user’s demands, Mr Litchfield added that Asian consumers have strong preferences for small, compact, lightweight phones of high quality and stylish design. They also expect very long operating times and look increasingly for features that are designed for their unique needs. The Nokia 3810 fulfils all these requirements and further provides the Asian language user interface and Asian SMS for greater relevance and ease of use. It also offers very loud ringing tones, a feature preferred by some Asian consumers, and a range of Asian ringing melodies.
The full range of local languages supported by the Nokia 3810 Asian language user interface and Asian SMS includes simplified and traditional Chinese, Thai, Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia and English. This makes the Nokia 3810 and the Nokia 8110 plus, the first phones with the capability to display both simplified and traditional Chinese and Thai characters in one phone.
The neat, softly curved design of the phone presents an assured and classic look. Combined with the ergonomic keypad layout, the phone’s curved shape enables very comfortable one-hand operation. The keypad layout with just the right number of keys, and the phones’ user-friendly interface, makes the Nokia 3810 a true benchmark of ease of use in cellular phones.
The Nokia 3810 will appeal to both private and business users. With the launch of the Nokia 3810, Nokia’s wide GSM product range is now complete.
Small and lightweight, the Nokia 3810 offers impressive performance. With a standard or vibrating battery, the Nokia 3810 weighs only 187 grams, offering up to 95 hours of standby or up to 2 hours 45 minutes of talk time. The extended battery provides up to 250 hours standby or up to 7 hours of talk time. With the slim Lithium-ion battery, the Nokia 3810 weighs a feather-light 146 grams, and offers up to 70 hours of standby or up to 2 hours talk time.
The Nokia 3810 also offers the six most preferred features requested by Asian consumers in the research conducted -- Calling Line Identification, one-touch voice mail button, recent calls lists, call divert/forward, Menu help text and call waiting. Additional features including speed-dialling, call barring and SMS were also included in response to consumer feedback from feature preference studies conducted in various Asian markets including Australia.
The Nokia 3810 shares a range of accessories with the Nokia 8100 series, including chargers, headset and car kits as well as a new desktop stand, batteries and belt clip of the Nokia 3000 series.
The phone supports full data connectivity, including sending and receiving of faxes, e-mail and files from a PC via the Nokia Cellular Data Card or the new Nokia Cellular Data Suite. A new and innovative solution offered by Nokia, the Nokia Cellular Data Suite is a software-based wireless data solution which integrates WindowsŇ 95 with the Nokia phone, enabling users to send and receive e-mail, faxes, computer files and short messages via the cellular network.
