CeBIT '97 Wrap-up: Nokia unveiled new mobile phones, wireless data and access network innovations

During the CeBIT '97 exhibition in Germany, Nokia successfully launched a number of GSM/DCS mobile phones and wireless data solutions, marking a milestone in the deployment of wireless data products. In addition, Nokia introduced capacity optimizing, flexible solutions for the access network that today delivers an expanding number of services to end users. The launches were coupled with a series of press conferences and presentations at the Nokia stands, attracting a record number of customers, distributors, and media and other visitors.
High-end mobile phones for DCS 1800 markets
This year, DCS 1800 networks are expected to take off in several markets in Europe and Asia-Pacific. To complement its product range, Nokia introduced a DCS 1800 version of the Nokia 9000 Communicator, the world's first all-in-one voice and data communications device, which now offers the same functionality as the award-winning GSM version, selling in 30 countries. For the high-end DCS 1800 segment, Nokia unveiled the Nokia 8148 handportable, combining the state-of-the-art design and outstanding performance.
Nokia makes Internet go wireless
For the first time, Nokia introduced a complete and comprehensive wireless data solution into telecommunications. With the Nokia Artus wireless data product family, operators can become Internet service providers offering access to information available in the WWW. The Nokia Artus products allowthe operator to manage and charge for their TCP/IP traffic in the same way as they control voice traffic today. In the terminal side, the new curved-shape Nokia 8110i handset is the first phone incorporating smart messaging features, coupled with the Nokia Artus Netgate solution, known in the United States as TTML Gateway, enable the user to directly access the Internet and fetch information from the Web pages. The information is formed into short messages and sent back to the subscriber. Nokia's Smart Messaging concept in an open specification, bringing Internet in your pocket.
World's smallest PC card with GSM capability
For laptop users requiring full voice and data services regardless of time and place, Nokia unveiled the Nokia Cellular Card Phone. This world's smallest PC card with built-in GSM capability turns a laptop PC into a wireless office without a cellular phone, interface adapters or cables.
GSM phone with fast access to all functions
Another industry innovation introduced by Nokia at CeBIT 97 is the Nokia 3110 GSM phone, which redefines ease of use for cellular phones through its smart menu system. The unique NaviTMKey allows fast, one-button access to the functions of the phone. Small and lightweight, the Nokia 3110 offers up to 95 hours standby or up to 2 h 45 minutes talk time on a standard battery.
Nokia builds up effective transport solutions
On the fixed network side, Nokia unveiled two new products to its Nokia SYNFONET, SDH product family. The increase in data traffic and explotion of Internet have set new demands to the access and transport network. The Nokia SYNFONET Access Node and the Nokia SYNFONET STM-16 Node enables the operators to flexibly build their network also in view of future data and broadband services.
