New Nokia Synfonet STM-16 Node for Flexibility in Transport Networks -Nokia builds up effective transport solutions
March 14, 1997
Nokia’s SDH product family, SYNFONET, provides the telecom operator with a total SDH concept for access and transport networks, incorporated under a full network management system, Nokia NMS. Nokia introduces today at the CeBIT fair in Hannover two new members to the SYNFONET product family; the SYNFONET STM-16 Node, the most integrated cross-connection node in the world and SYNFONET Access Node (SAN).
Optimising the transport network
Nokia’s SYNFONET SDH product family is expanding with the SYNFONET STM-16 Node, based on latest technology. It provides the SYNFONET product family with higher capacity and is ready for future broadband service requirements.
True SDH networks provide effective use of transmission capacity and fast service provisioning. The SYNFONET STM-16 Node has the advantages of Nokia's SDH solution, common to all SYNFONET products. The STM-16 Node follows the same “Build as you Go!” and “Three Networks in One” principles that guarantee safe growth path for future and ultimate flexibility to follow continuous network evolution driven by the rapidly changing business environment.
Due to fast changes, future transmission needs in capacity and network structure can be determined for a limited time period only, which makes network planning a complicated and challenging task. It is therefore in the operator's interest to build a network gradually, where initial investments are low.
This requires a highly flexible network, which can be easily expanded as soon as the capacity or service requirements increase. When frequent changes are expected, the network must be topology-independent and additions of nodes must be possible without redesign of protected transmission, management and synchronisation networks.
The SYNFONET STM-16 Node is specially developed to be used in this kind of environment. It integrates multiple STM-16 interfaces and high cross-connect capacity in a very compact size.
One node for all
The SYNFONET STM-16 Node is configurable as TM (Terminal Multiplexer), ADM (Add/Drop Multiplexer) or Digital Cross Connect and has all the SDH features in one subrack.
The configuration can be easily modified later by changing or adding interface units - thus the operator can respond quickly to increasing demands in the network. By using SYNFONET STM-16 Nodes, the operator is assured of optimal initial investment in the network, and minimal subsequent expansion costs when the network grows.
The compact size, excellent reliability, and high information processing power of the Nokia SYNFONET STM-16 Node gives operators great advantages when building their transport networks.
Note to the editors:
SDH: SDH equipment improves the capacity and availability in a telecommunications network. It enables the operator to, for example supervise and allocate network resources for optimal performance at any time. SDH is also a platform for future telecommunication services. The Nokia SYNFONET family consists of STM-1/4, STM-16 and SAN (SYNFONET Access Node) products.
Nokia has delivered SDH systems to more than 50 customers in over 20 countries.
