The new products, which will hit the market in the next few months, include three digital phones, a DCS 1800 version of the Nokia 9000 Communicator, and two wireless data products.

For the high-end user segment, Nokia announced the new sophisticated Nokia 8110i GSM handportable, which combines innovative curved design with enhanced functionality. The new 8110i incorporates the Smart Messaging concept, enabling a wide range of new applications, such as access to various value-added information and Internet services.

Another new GSM handportable from Nokia is the Nokia 3110, a high-quality phone designed to offer ultimate ease-of-use with a unique one-key access to all functions. Small and lightweight, the Nokia 3110 has a broad set of features.

For the DCS 1800 market, Nokia announced a superior high-end handportable to the digital 8100 Nokia series. The Nokia 8148 combines state-of the art design and outstanding performance, offering sophisticated features.

The award-winning Nokia 9000 Communicator, the world’s first all-in-one communications device, will now be available also for DCS 1800 networks. Offering the same advanced functionality as the GSM version, the Nokia 9000 for DCS 1800 combines voice, fax, email, short messaging and Internet services and personal organizer functions into a single compact unit.

- With the introduction of our latest products, Nokia reinforces its position as the company offering the most compherensive, broadest range of products - not only for GSM, but also for the DCS 1800 standard. As the global market leader in digital phones, we believe that Nokia is well positioned to contribute to the growth of digital by supplying products to all major market segments and standards, including GSM and DCS 1800, the Japanese PDC as well as to all digital standards used in America, says Pekka Ala-Pietilä, President of Nokia Mobile Phones.

According to industry estimates, the number of digital subscribers will double in 1997, from 50 million to a total of 100 million. Europe is leading the digital deployment, with almost 90 % of new subscribers already using GSM. The total cellular market grew from 85 million to about 135 million during 1996.

Digitalisation has paved way for the emergence of new product concepts and value-adding services. - We firmly believe that the growth of the wireless data business will continue, and we see segmentation starting in this business as well. Another interesting trend is that handsets will icreasingly enable the use of new advanced digital services. A good example of this development is the new Nokia 8110i, which supports the Nokia Smart Messaging concept, enabling direct access to various information and Internet services, notes Ala-Pietilä.

To address the emerging segments in the wireless data markets, Nokia announced two new advanced solutions. The Nokia Cellular Card Phone integrates a PC card and GSM phone, turning a laptop PC to a complete wireless office without a cellular phone, interface adapters and cables, whereas the Nokia Cellular Data Suite is a software-based data solution for use in the Windows ‘95 environment together with a digital Nokia phone.
