The Nokia flagship phone supports direct access to Internet services -Nokia Launches The New Nokia 8110i GSM Handportable, Incorporating Smart Messaging
March 12, 1997

Nokia today announced an upgraded version of the Nokia 8110, the sophisticated high-end GSM handportable. Called the Nokia 8110i, the new curved-shape product combines innovative design with totally new functionality, enhancing Nokia’s leadership in smart handsets. The new Nokia 8110i will be available in volume starting this summer.

The Nokia 8110i is the first handportable to support the Nokia-developed concept of Smart Messaging, an open specification enabling a wide range of new applications, such as information services and Internet access. The Nokia Netgate, a Web viewer in the Nokia 8110i, will allow access to information and various value-added services available on the Internet directly from the phone, without a PC or modem.

Smart Messaging also allows for the use of various other services, such as over-the-air sending of names, phone numbers and ringing tones to the phone. The over-the-air phone customization will also incorporate dynamic menus that vary according to the services offered by operators and service providers.

Uniquely curved, the Nokia 8110i fits naturally in the hand and in the pocket. With the innovative sliding cover, the phone can be adjusted to an ideal ear-to mouth length between 11 and 17 centimeters. The slide also protects the keypad of the phone.

- The Nokia 8110, with its state-of the art design and superb functionality, has been a success in the demanding high-end market segment. With the introduction of Smart Messaging, the new Nokia 8110i will open up totally new possibilities for utilizing various exciting services available through the Internet, and more. This phone is a trend-setter for a new generation of smart handsets, says Anssi Vanjoki, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe and Africa.

The illuminated full graphics display automatically changes the text font size for best viewing. Among the useful features are the dedicated voice mail box button, various speed dialling options, simple phone management as well as support of data and GSM phase two services. New features include ALS (Alternative Line Service), enabling users to have two different subscriber numbers, e.g. for private and business purposes, and Call Transfer, which makes it possible to divert ongoing calls.

The Nokia 8110i is small and lightweight at 152 grams with the standard Lithium-Ion battery. The phone delivers long operating times: talk time is up to 2 hours or standby up to 70 hours with the standard battery, while the extended battery provides up to 5 hours talk time or 150 hours of standby.

The new Nokia 8110i shares the accessories of the other products in the Nokia 8100 series, including desktop stands, chargers, headset and car kits and extended Lithium-Ion batteries. A selection of stylish colored covers will be available starting in June.
