The Nokia Cellular Data Suite - A New Integrated Wireless Data Solution For Windows '95
March 12, 1997

Nokia today introduced, as the first cellular manufacturer, a new and innovative concept for wireless data communication in a MS Windows ‘95 environment. The Nokia Cellular Data Suite is being launched for digital GSM/DCS 1800 standards, with market availability in March. Called Nokia Soft Data, the product will be available for the Japanese PDC in the second quarter of 1997.

- At present, the majority of GSM operators worldwide are offering data services, and the number of subscribers is constantly growing. The wireless data market is becoming segmented, and Nokia has a wide product range to offer for different end-user needs. The new Nokia Cellular Data Suite is an optimized connectivity solution for the growing number of users in the MS Windows environment, says Reijo Paajanen, Senior Vice President, Wireless Data, Nokia Mobile Phones.

The Nokia Cellular Data Suite is a software-based wireless data solution, which integrates Windows ‘95 with the Nokia phone, enabling the user to send and receive e-mail, faxes, computer files and short messages via the cellular network. The Nokia Cellular Data Suite allows the user to communicate via a serial port, leaving the PCMCIA slot free for a network card, CD ROM drive, printer or other peripherals. The Nokia Cellular Data Suite includes a serial cable connecting a laptop PC to a Nokia 8110, Nokia 3110 or compatible GSM/DCS 1800 phones, software running on the Windows ‘95 operating system, and documentation in major European languages.

With the Nokia Cellular Data Suite, short messaging and phone memory can be efficiently managed from a laptop PC. Short Messages can be written on the PC and sent fast and easily to the receiver’s mobile phone. Names and numbers can be added, deleted and copied in the Nokia Cellular Data Suite window and downloaded to a digital Nokia phone.

Easy to set up and use, the Nokia Cellular Data Suite can be installed and configured like any other Windows ‘95 software. The software compatibility covers all standard Windows ‘95 applications: PC fax software, such as Delrina WinFax PRO, Trio Datafax; e-mail applications, such as MS Mail, cc:Mail and TeamWARE; and most Windows communications programs, such as ProComm Plus. The sales package consists of a serial cable, installation diskettes and both installation and user guides.

The high-speed and high accuracy data transmission is guaranteed by automatic correction in the network with an error rate of only 1 byte per million. The Nokia Cellular Data Suite enables the use of data transmission rates up to 38,400 bps (V.42bis).
