Nokia Provides Technology for Enhanced Voice Quality in TDMA Phones
March 03, 1997
Nokia today announced that its TDMA IS-136 wireless phones will be equipped with the new Enhanced Full Rate (EFR) vocoder delivering enhanced digital voice quality. The improved Nokia 2160 will be commercially available in the third quarter of 1997.
The new TDMA EFR ACELP vocoder incorporates Nokia’s own leading-edge technology, developed by Nokia and the University of Sherbrooke (Canada) and chosen as the industry standard for TDMA. (The EFR vocoder is a coding algorithm that facilitates the conversion of analog speech into a digital data stream that can be modulated for transmission over the radio channel.)
“The acceptance of Nokia’s technology further strengthens Nokia’s lead in providing the industry with innovative digital technology,” said Larry Paulson, Vice President, Business Development at Nokia Mobile Phones Inc. “ In addition to providing enhanced voice quality, this solution is less complex and will be the next step in the ever evolving TDMA technology.”
In addition, Nokia’s EFR voice codec technology was chosen as the industry standard for GSM 1900 and has been adopted as the industry standard codec for GSM/DCS around the world. Nokia has also provided essential algorithms for CDMA’s EVRC (enhanced variable rate codec), reflecting Nokia’s global leadership in digital technology development.
