Nokia Introduces New Wireless Payphone
March 03, 1997

Nokia today introduced a small sized, integrated wireless payphone for GSM networks in the Americas. The Nokia wireless payphone is the first integrated wireless payphone in the market and allows public payphone installation in new applications like taxis, limousines and offers flexibility in temporary fixed installations.

The Nokia wireless payphone provides a standard, easy-to-use payphone interface, large graphical display, handsfree functionality and modern design. Additionally, the payphone comes in an array of colors. Payment methods include ISO7816 standard smart card technologies ( I, II and III generation) and electronic purse.

“The Nokia wireless payphone was designed to make installation simple for mobile locations. Phone services can also be customized to meet varying operator needs,” said Dan Paulson, director of PCS sales at Nokia.

The new wireless payphones can be operated either stand-alone or by utilizing Nokia’s wireless payphone management system, a software system that supports the maintenance and operation of Nokia wireless payphones. In addition to providing statistical information on usage, and the contribution of each payphone, the terminals can be controlled or monitored to prevent fraudulent use.

The Nokia wireless payphone system combines Nokia’s expertise both in PCS terminals and infrastructure technology. Nokia has delivered wireless payphones to more than 20 customers worldwide for commercial and test use. Recently, Nokia announced the world’s largest delivery of GSM 900 and DCS 1800 wireless payphones to Thailand and South Africa, which substantiates the growing importance of wireless technologies in meeting basic telecommunication needs. The Nokia wireless payphone is also available for NMT 450 and AMPS. The AMPS version is sold in Latin America.
