Nokia Supplies Access Network to Globe Telecom in the Philippines
March 03, 1997
Globe Telecom has chosen Nokia to supply it with a residential access network comprising telephony access nodes, digital SDH transmission and a network management system for the Philippines. The deliveries has already started. This is the first fixed network contract Nokia has signed with Globe Telecom.
Nokia will also supply tropical outdoor cabinets to allow Globe Telecom to deploy the access nodes and the SDH transport system freely throughout their service areas. Nokia Telecommunications will be employed to plan and implement the network. Globe Telecom will use Nokia’s residential access network to supply telephone services in four of their service areas: Makati, Mandaluyong, Batangas and Cavite. The first two areas are business districts within Metro Manila and the other two are industrial/residential areas outside Metro Manila.
Globe Telecom has a mandate from the Philippine government to deploy 700,000 fixed telephone lines in different service areas.
Mr. Stephan Granroth, Nokia Telecommunications Philippines’ Managing Director, commented “Globe Telecom’s decision to purchase a fixed access network from Nokia will give them the ability to hasten their telephone service deployment and the flexibility to support other services like ISDN when required.”
In December, 1993, Nokia and Globe Telecom signed an agreement for the supply of the first phase of a GSM digital cellular network to the Philippines, and the network was opened in September, 1994. Since then, Nokia has signed two expansion agreements for that network, the first in March and the second in December 1995.
Globe Telecom is a telecommunications venture of the Ayala Corporation and Singapore Telecom International. Its service portfolio includes cellular mobile telephone services, international telephony, fixed telephone services, international private leased lines, VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) and data communications services
