Nokia Expands GSM Network in Beijing, China
February 26, 1997

Beijing Telecommunications Administration and Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications Ltd. have signed an agreement for the expansion of Beijing TA’s GSM network. The deliveries will begin in February and the value of the agreement is close to USD 50 million. With this expansion, the network capacity will be increased to 550,000 subscribers.

Nokia will deliver to Beijing TA its DX 200 mobile switching centres, base station controllers, base stations and home location registers. The agreement also includes expansions to the existing switching centres, base station controllers, home location registers and network management system.

Chinese-character short message service will be supported by the Nokia Short Message Service Center and full GSM infrastructure. The future top-end Nokia GSM phones sold in China will have Chinese SMS as a standard feature. Nokia will supply to Beijing the full network subsystem and also a major part of the base station subsystem.

Nokia’s DX 200 mobile switching center serves over 100,000 subscribers in Beijing TA’s network. It is the largest capacity of a single mobile switching center in China.

Beijing TA’s network, supplied by Nokia, is the first system to support international roaming among GSM networks in China.

Nokia announced the first phase order of the Beijing GSM network in May 1994, and has previously signed two expansion agreements with Beijing TA, the first one in February, 1995 and the second in May, 1996.
