Nokia 9000 Communicator Wins GSM MoU Innovation Award
February 19, 1997

Nokia’s revolutionary communications device, the Nokia 9000 Communicator, has today been presented the GSM World Award 1997 for innovation, at the GSM World Conference in Cannes, France. This award is especially significant, since the nomination was based on unanimous vote from a prestigious jury representing more than 2 300 industry participants at the congress.

The 1997 GSM World Conference is the 11th consecutive event organised by the GSM MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) Association. Organised annually for GSM professionals, the congress gives recognition to innovation within the industry as well as other categories, such as Marketing Success and Customer Growth.

- In the GSM World Award Innovation category, the judges found one nomination that encompassed everything that is unprecedented in mobile communications. Featuring a combination of voice and data services in one single unit, the Nokia 9000 Communicator is a real milestone product in terms of the development of mobile data. Nokia’s Communicator has opened a brand-new product category and expanded the product range for the cellular industry as a whole, said Gretel Holcomb Hoffman, Chairman of the GSM MoU Association, in the award ceremony.

- With the Nokia 9000 Communicator, we took a significant step towards creating a more wireless environment, facilitating everyday life. This product is the most visible sign of Nokia’s full commitment to the development of wireless data. We are heartened by the GSM MoU Association’s recognition of our pioneering solutions to the industry, stated Reijo Paajanen, Senior Vice President, Wireless Data, at Nokia Mobile Phones.

The GSM MoU Innovation Award is the sixth major award for the Nokia 9000 Communicator. Upon its initial launch at the CeBIT exhibition in 1996, the Nokia 9000 Communicator was nominated ‘Best of Show’ product by Byte magazine. Last year, Nokia’s digital classic, the Nokia 2110 handportable, received the Outstanding Phone Award at GSM World Conference in Cannes.
