Collaboration in Creating the Mobile Internet Environment of the Future
January 13, 1997
Nokia and Sendit Collaborate to Offer Solutions for Mobile Internet
Nokia Telecommunications, the leader in GSM wireless Internet system solutions, and Sendit, a fast growing supplier of Internet messaging platforms for cellular network operators, today agreed to collaborate and coordinate their product plans for Sendit’s mobile-based e-messaging platform ICSA and Nokia’s wireless Internet systems.
Nokia and Sendit have agreed on compatible interfaces enabling ICSA and Nokia’s Internet system to form a seamless solution for advanced mobile e-mail service including notification of received mail. Compatible interface enable operators to connect ICSA servers to the modem less access through Nokia’s Data Communication Server (DaCS), as well as to the Nokia Short Message Service Centre (SMSC).
“Compatible interfaces and a joint verification program will ensure full inter-operability now and in the future between Nokia DaCS, Nokia SMSC and Sendit ICSA,” said Hjalmar Winbladh, Managing Director of Sendit. “Through close collaboration with Nokia, we can ensure full support and compatibility not only for today’s end-user services but also for future solutions to be developed in the spirit of innovative use of Internet.”
Nokia sees electronic mail offered as a public network as an important opportunity for wireless operators to harness the quickly growing business user need to access Internet. “Small businesses may not have the luxury of departmental e-mail service and GSM operators can provide a perfect messaging solution for people on the move,” noted Petri Pöyhönen, Vice President, Wireless Data Server Systems at Nokia Telecommunications. “Our cooperation with Sendit is in line with Nokia’s objective to work with industry innovators to develop Internet-based solutions that add value to our operator customers’ networks.”
Sendit AB is the leading provider of Internet e-mail servers to digital cellular network operators. Founded in 1994, the privately owned company based in Stockholm, Sweden, has already installed ICSA systems at leading European cellular operators in Sweden and UK, two of the world’s most advanced and demanding cellular markets. Other GSM network operators in Europe and Asia are currently testing ICSA for service launch in 1997. Also PCS 1900 operators in the United States are evaluating ICSA.
Sendit’s ICSA (Internet Cellular Smart Access) system is a true mobile centered e-messaging system. The advanced system and Sendit’s patented agent technology allows for higher quality of service and more functionality in a mobile environment than most Internet Service Providers can offer in a fixed environment. Version 3 of ICSA will be available in the first quarter of 1997. Its pricing structure enables operators to “pay-as-they-grow”.
Nokia is an international telecommunications group with net sales of USD 8.4 billion in 1995 and has approximately 30,000 employees worldwide. Nokia is the world’s largest supplier of DCS 1800 networks and one of the two leading suppliers of GSM networks. To date Nokia's GSM/DCS technology has been supplied or ordered by 53 operators in 31 countries.
Nokia is the industry leader in the GSM Internet solutions. The Nokia SMSC has been supplied to more than 20 networks world wide. Nokia SMSC is known for its proven capacity and well developed interface for application developers. Innovation leaders are using Nokia SMSC for advanced messaging services such as distribution of stock quotes and news.
Nokia announced recently, together with Intel, Narrow Band Socket technology enabling always-on-always-connected applications. As early as 1994 Nokia introduced the Data Communications Server (DaCS), which provides direct LAN connectivity for cellular data users, enabling almost instant connection to application servers. The DaCS system, now installed in several networks, enables operators to offer substantially improved quality of data services.
