Nokia and Psion Sign Cooperation Agreement on PC Cards

Interface between Psion Dacom’s PC cards and Nokia’s digital handsets established
Nokia Mobile Phones and Psion Dacom today announce a cooperation agreement which makes two of Europe's most successful product lines, Nokia GSM and PCN phones and Psion Dacom PC cards and, compatible with each other.
Nokia and Psion consider the cooperation significant for the GSM data application development. Under the licensing agreement, Psion Dacom’s Gold Card multifunction and GSM cards will be compatible with the digital Nokia GSM and PCN handsets, and users of digital Nokia phones will benefit from of multifunction cards. Existing Psion Gold Cards (units manufactured since September 1995) can be upgraded via flash memory to support the Nokia phones.
"As clear market leaders in GSM phones and wireless data, this partnership between Nokia and Psion Dacom is well-placed to further boost the growth of wireless data. In the near future, we foresee a continuing rapid growth in wireless data communications usage. Psion Dacom will provide approved Nokia connectors for both new and existing data users", said Mikko Terho, Vice President, Wireless Data Products, Nokia Mobile Phones.
Commenting on the agreement, Gareth Hughes, Managing Director, Psion Dacom said: "We are naturally delighted to be the first PC Card manufacturer licensed and approved to use the Nokia GSM data interface. This agreement will further enhance our position as European leaders in GSM and multi-function PC Cards. By working together with Nokia, we can guarantee reliable and tested quality solutions to the customers."
Nokia Mobile Phones was the first company to introduce a digital PC/fax card in 1994. Connected to a Nokia digital phone and a laptop computer, the Nokia Cellular Data Card enables the transmission of faxes, emails and files via GSM networks.
The Nokia-compatible Psion products will be marketed under the brand name Psion Gold Card. Details of pricing and market availability in Europe will be announced in early 1997.
