The Award of Nokia Foundation in 1996 to Pekka Tarjanne, Secretary-General of ITU

The Award of Nokia Foundation in 1996 has been granted to Ph. D. Pekka Tarjanne, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). The size of the Award is FIM 50,000.


Nokia Foundation, which was formed in 1995 to support the development of scientific competence and educational capabilities of information and telecommunications technologies in Finland, has also granted a scholarship to 19 post-graduate students and five teams supporting interaction between universities and the industry. Moreover, the Foundation has granted a visiting fellowship to three well-known professors for their stay at the Finnish universities.

In selecting the award winner, the Foundation took especially into account the central role of Mr Tarjanne in the deregulation of telecommunications in Finland and the conversion of Posts and Telecommunications of Finland as a whole into a commercial company when he was holding the position of Director-General of Posts and Telecommunications in 1977-89. Since 1989 as Secretary-General of ITU, he has made a significant contribution to the development of the global telecommunications.

Mr Tarjanne has also distinguished himself in research work and teaching at the universities. After obtaining a Ph.D. from the Helsinki University of Technology in 1962, he engaged in research work and teaching in Denmark, the US and Finland.

The list of Mr Tarjanne´s merits include his notable political career through which he has also influenced on the telecommunications industry. He was President of the Finnish Liberal Party in 1968-78, a Member of Parliament in 1970-77 and Minister of Transport and Communications in 1972-75, serving also as Minister responsible for Nordic cooperation.
