Nokia to Market and Distribute HP Quickburst Cable Modem
December 12, 1996

Nokia and Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) have announced their manufacturing and marketing agreement. HP will supply Nokia with HP QuickBurst cable modems and link routers that will be marketed and distributed as Nokia branded products throughout Europe. Nokia and HP estimate that the agreement will generate a significant amount of Internet related business for both companies over a multi-year period. The agreement expands Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals Division's product offer to cable market and will further expand HP's own direct sales channels already established in Europe.

"We have been watching the high speed data access arena carefully and teamed with HP to enter into it because we see significant demand for high volumes", said Heikki Koskinen, President, Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals. "We chose to work with HP over other manufacturers because of HP's superior technology, international compatibility, and our past co-operation".

"Other parts of HP have teamed with Nokia to produce rewarding results in the past, and we are confident that Nokia's strong presence in Europe will expand HP's market for the QuickBurst Link", said Bill Hahn, HP's Operations Manager, Interactive Broadband Products, Video Communication Division. "As the desire for more and varied methods of high speed data delivery grows, so will our relationship with Nokia".

The two companies will jointly explore also future manufacturing/marketing concepts involving integrated video/data/voice gateways to end-users, combining Nokia's strengths in telephony, wireless and satellite set-tops with HP's expertise in computer networking, high speed data delivery and radio frequency testing.

Hewlett-Packard's Interactive Broadband Products, Video Communication Division, provides broadband network operators with products and interactive services for the home, including the HP QuickBurst Link, comprised of the HP QuickBurst cable modem and link router. Either as part of HP's end-to-end Broadband Internet Delivery System (BIDS) or as a best-in-class component, the HP QuickBurst Link will provide PC users with interactive data services that deliver much faster performance levels and richer content than telephone modems.
