Nokia Celebrates its New Office in New Delhi
November 27, 1996

Nokia´s new main Indian Office was officially inaugurated today in New Delhi by the President of Finland, Mr Martti Ahtisaari and Mr Jorma Ollila, President and CEO, Nokia Group. The ceremonies, including a traditional ribbon cutting, took place in the new office wing of the Radisson Complex, some 10 kilometers south from midtown Delhi.

To be close to its Indian customers and to reinforce its position in the region, Nokia has opened a total of ten offices in India, employing over 180 people. The offices are located in Delhi, Calcutta, Madras, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Cochin, Coimbatore, Pune and Chandigarh.

In order to provide total system support to the customers in India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, Nokia has also established a Customer Service Centre and a Product Competence Centre in Delhi, where local market needs and Nokia’s product solutions are matched. These centres enhance Nokia's ability to offer turn-key solutions and full implementation capability in both cellular and basic service networks.

Nokia has reached a significant position selling telecommunications systems and equipment and mobile phones on the Indian market. The Group has supplied or is currently supplying GSM networks to six operators in an area covering a population of 330 million people and nearly one million square kilometers. Nokia is also exploring the market for its multimedia products, including the Nokia Mediamaster digital satellite multimedia terminal.

Nokia has sold mobile phones in India since the launch of cellular services in the country in 1995. It quickly established itself as the market leader, with the award-winning Nokia 2110 becoming the largest selling mobile phone in India.

Nokia has maintained its market position by expanding its product range for different user groups. In India, the Nokia 1610 represents a compact and cost-effective phone with excellent talk and standby times. The Nokia 8110, launched in India in September 1996, is a top of the line GSM phone with an attractive and ergonomic design, super-small size and enhanced features. Nokia’s technological leadership and innovation will be further reinforced in India with the forthcoming launch of the Nokia 9000 Communicator, which combines digital voice and data services and personal organiser functions into a single small-sized and easy to use unit.
