Nokia Expands Fujian GSM Network in China

Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications Ltd. and the Fujian Post and Telecommunications Administration have signed a major expansion contract which will bring increased capacity, enhanced coverage as well as leading edge technology into Fujian province in People's Republic of China. The value of the contract is over USD 80 million.


Nokia will deliver to Fujian PTA an expansion of subscriber capacity for digital GSM systems and also the first commercial available Chinese Short Message Service. The deliveries will begin at the end of this year and the expansion will be taken into operation during the Autumn of 1997.

After the expansion, the GSM network will have a capacity of up to 600,000 subscribers and Fujian PTA will provide cellular capacity to over 1 million subscribers. The initial network, delivered by Nokia, was taken into operation in November, 1995. Nokia also supplied the first network expansion to Fujian during the first half of 1996. Nokia and Fujian PTA have also tested successfully GSM/DCS dualband network.

Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications Ltd. is a Joint Venture between Beijing Telecommunications Equipment Factory of MPT and Nokia. It was established in April 1995 under wide-range cooperation agreement between Nokia and the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications of China. Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications Ltd. manufactures digital radio base stations and mobile phones, and provides distribution, marketing and customer services for mobile phones and network products.

Nokia has supplied its GSM technology in China also to the Beijing TA, Zhejiang PTA, Henan PTA, Jiangxi PTA, Yunnan PTA, Changsha Unicom and Shanghai Unicom.
