Nokia and Beijing TA Trial Dual Band in Live Network

China's first live dual band trial was presented on November 5, at the ExpoComm 96 exhibition in Beijing. The trial was based on GSM and DCS versions of Nokia PrimeSite base stations connected to the existing Beijing TA's GSM system also supplied by Nokia. Already in this September Nokia and Fujian PTA have already succesfully conducted the GSM/DCS trial in Fuzhou.
DCS 1800 is a derivative of the GSM technology, operating in the 1800 MHz frequency band. As 900 MHz GSM bands begin to fill, the DCS band can be deployed to extend capacity. The GSM/DCS dual band technology is an ideal solution for operators to increase capacity in urban areas and traffic hot spots. The GSM bandwidth can be used to build the basic coverage, while DCS 1800 extends capacity to meet local high subscriber numbers and traffic in the network. The wider frequency band and smaller cell size of DCS 1800 allows more capacity, higher traffic density and more flexibility in frequency planning.
Using Nokia’s common GSM/DCS network elements, a DCS base station can be integrated to an existing GSM network without any new hardware investments into network management, switching subsystems or base station controllers. The common DX-200 switching platform also ensures that Nokia's value-added features and services are available for both GSM and DCS subscribers.

Nokia PrimeSite base station was launched in 1995, and both GSM and DCS versions have been commercially available since Autumn 1996.
