Nokia Introduces Chinese User Interface for the Nokia 8110 GSM Handportable to PRC Market
November 05, 1996

Nokia’s Chinese User Interface for the Nokia 8110 handportable phone was launched in the PRC today at the PT/ExpoComm in Beijing. Nokia is the first manufacturer to offer both simplified and traditional character sets in the same phone.

Mr. Hans Ehrnrooth, General Manager, Nokia Mobile Phones, North Asia said, “Asia will be the biggest regional cellular market in the world by 1998, and Chinese speaking countries will account for a large proportion of that volume. China is already among the top 5 cellular markets in the world. Nokia responds to the special needs of the Chinese-speaking population through the launch of the Chinese character set in our latest Nokia 8110 handportable.”

Noted for pioneering, innovative, easy to use phones, Nokia’s introduction of the Chinese user interface is yet another tangible feature that makes Nokia’s products relevant and easy to use for consumers.

The simplified character set version is mainly targeted for the markets in People’s Republic of China and Singapore. The traditional character set interface, is designed to be used in cellular markets like Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia. First shipments to the PRC are this month.

The Chinese user interface was developed by a team of native Chinese-speaking Nokia personnel. During the development phases, the characters were specifically designed to provide the best possible clarity, legibility and calligraphic shape. This is the first Nokia phone with a dot matrix full graphics display with Chinese characters. It changes the text size automatically for easy viewing. Menu texts come in 1 x 4 characters (main menu) or 2 x 5 characters (sub-menus).
