Nokia Supplies Two PCN Networks to Hong Kong
October 01, 1996

Nokia Telecommunications, the infrastructure arm of Finland-based Nokia Group, has signed agreements with two Hong Kong PCN operators, P Plus Communications and New World PCS, for the supply of PCN (DCS 1800) networks to Hong Kong. Installation and testing work for both systems is already under way to facilitate the operators to start their services very soon.

Mr Mark Bole, Managing Director of Nokia Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Limited, said “Nokia is well positioned for rapid deployment of PCS networks in Hong Kong and we look forward to working with our new customers. By contributing our experience in developing GSM and PCN networks throughout Asia, we are fully committed to providing P Plus and New World PCS with solutions to deliver cost-effective, advanced mobile communications to Hong Kong people.”

P Plus and New World PCS are new PCS license operators in Hong Kong. The award of PCS licenses will help Hong Kong to meet growing demand for digital mobile phone service and will maintain Hong Kong’s worldwide pre-eminence in wireless communications. According to Office of the Telecommunications Authority, the number of mobile phone users in Hong Kong stood more than 700,000 in the beginning of this year. It is predicted that the number of subscribers will increase to 1.2 million at the end of the year.

P Plus Communications

The value of the contract with P Plus Communications is in excess of USD 30 million. Nokia will supply P Plus a complete Personal Communication Network (PCN) system, based on DCS 1800 technology. The contract includes the switching platform, base stations, base station controllers and a comprehensive network management system.

P Plus Communications Ltd. is a consortium led by Star Telecom , the Taiwanese Pacific Electrical Wire and Cable Group and Telecom Finland Limited.

New World PCS

Nokia will supply New World a complete Personal Communication Network (PCN) system, based on DCS 1800 (Digital Cellular System 1800) technology. The contract includes the switching platform, base stations, base station controllers and a comprehensive network management system.

New World PCS (NWPCS) is part of Hong Kong’s New World Telephone Holdings Group.

DCS 1800 is an evolution of GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology, which has been widely adopted in the world. It offers the same versatile services that are possible with GSM -- such as short messaging; sending and receiving faxes; voice messages and data communications.

In addition, DCS 1800 can enable a greater number of subscribers to be supported because it uses different part of radio spectrum. While GSM operates in the 900 MHz frequency, DCS 1800 operates at 1800 MHz. This extra capacity eases capacity constraints faced by Hong Kong's existing mobile phone networks.
