Nokia Supplies NMT Switching Technology to Russia

Multiregional Transit Telecom of Russia and Nokia Telecommunications have signed a frame agreement for the supply of Nokia’s NMT 450 MTX switches to Russia during 1996 - 1997. The Nokia switches will be delivered to operators in different cities in Russia where Multiregional Transit Telecom has its partners. The value of the contract is approximately USD 15 million.


- NMT 450 technology is suitable and cost-efficient system for our country. The Russian operators have roaming agreement with Swedish, Norwegian and Danish PTTs. We do believe that this contract with Nokia is a good start for our cooperation in the future, said Mr. V. Gurkin, President of Multiregional Transit Telecom.

Multiregional Transit Telecom is a Russian company, which offers transit connections for nationwide federal cellular networks. It is also a share holder in 20 regional NMT operator companies in Russia.

Previously, Nokia has supplied its NMT 450 technology to Moscow, St. Petersburg and several other cities in Russia. Delta Telecom’s NMT 450 network, the first NMT 450 network in Russia, was delivered by Nokia in 1991.

Nokia has supplied its NMT technology to 32 operators in 24 countries.
