Nokia House Opened in Copenhagen
August 30, 1996

The new Nokia House in Frederikskaj, Copenhagen now rooms all 300 Nokia employees in Denmark. The inauguration of the new house is a result of strong growth in Nokia's operations in Denmark.

The Nokia House incorporates Nokia Mobile Phones A/S and Nokia Telecommunications A/S. Nokia Mobile Phones markets mobile phones and communications equipment for all the analog and digital systems in Denmark, and runs an R&D unit which concentrates on the research and development of future mobile telephone systems. Nokia Telecommunications markets both fixed and mobile networks and systems as well as transmission systems and other telecommunications equipment.

At the opening ceremony of the new house, Yrjö Neuvo, Senior Vice President, R&D, Nokia Mobile Phones commented on the challenger status of the cellular technology:

– Today, cellular technology offers an increasing number of diversified services. Short Message Service (SMS) on the signaling channels is already in use in GSM and is becoming an instant modern-day postcard. The latest mobile products, like the Nokia 9000 Communicator, with many data services and quality Internet browsing capability, already offer several alternative ways for interactive communication. Before the end of this decade mobile phones will offer remarkably faster data transmission and support for advanced data applications. Various new enhanced data services are currently being standardised.

– Another step towards high quality and user-friendly mobile telephones will be the introduction of the Enhanced Full Rate (EFR) voice codec for high quality speech in GSM. The voice quality of EFR has been shown in extensive tests to be even better than wireline quality. This specification has already been adopted in all GSM markets, including North America, and it will be launched in the products in the near future, said Yrjö Neuvo.
