Superior Communications Sdn. Bdh. and Nokia Telecommunications have signed a contract for the supply of a GSM network to Uzbekistan. The deliveries will start in September.

Nokia will deliver to Uzbekistan a complete state-of-the-art GSM network on a turn-key basis including a Nokia DX 200 mobile switching centre, base station controller and base stations. In addition, Nokia will provide technical support services.

- We chose Nokia due to their worldwide leadership in GSM development. We were especially impressed with Nokia’s commitment to the project, short delivery time, extensive range of services and its experience working in CIS countries, said Mr. Abu Bakar Sharif, Executive Director of Superior Communications. - In the first phase the network will cover Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan and our target is to have some 20,000 subscribers during the first two years.

The network will be operated by Uzmacom, which is a joint venture between Uzbekistan Telekom (Uztel) and Superior Communications Sdn. Bdh. of Malaysia.
