August 19, 1996
Nokia Telecommunications and GPT Strategic Communications Systems (GPT SCS) have signed a contract worth GBP 10 million to provide a MPT 1327 based Actionet Private Mobile Radio (PMR) system and supporting transmission network for the UK’s London Underground Northern Line redevelopment programme.
GPT SCS is under contract to GEC ALSTHOM NL Service Provision Ltd, which has a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract for the provision of train services on the Northern Line, to provide the necessary communications systems. The new PMR system will provide enhanced solutions for staff on trains and other operational staff to communicate with controllers and with each other.
Nokia’s areas of responsibility includes the supply, installation and commissioning of the Actionet trunked radio system and mobiles, handportables, RF design, the leaky feeder cable, voice logging systems, despatcher stations.
The leaky feeder cable system will provide radio coverage over the entire line. The new radio system will form part of the general upgrade of the line to provide improved services to the public by increased reliability, availability and safety. By establishing strong links between cellular and mobile radio handset technologies and by introducing new advanced features to Nokia’s Actionet system especially aimed for underground and metro applications this new system will result in a state of the art network.
"We are confident that this turnkey system will support all the functionality required by a modern metro system, and bring third millenium technology to the Northern Line," commented Mr Peter Kuhne, Managing Director of Nokia Telecommunications UK Ltd. "I am particularly pleased that we successfully fought off some very strong competition to win this contract."
Nokia is a leading supplier of MPT 1327 standard trunked mobile networks and will continue to introduce this technology to new applications and new markets. Nokia is also taking a leading role in the development of digital TETRA systems with services and features designed to serve public safety and security applications.
