August 15, 1996

North-West GSM and Nokia Telecommunications have singed a 3-year frame agreement for the expansion of the North-West GSM’s network in St. Petersburg, Russia. The value of the agreement is approximately USD 40 million.

"We are very satisfied with our network development. Today we have approximately 16,000 subscribers in the network, and this new contract gives us all the necessary elements to increase the capacity up to 150,000 subscribers. Nokia’s technology, operation mode and customer services have proved to be high class", says Mr. Alexander Nyago, General Director, North-West GSM.

Nokia will deliver to St. Petersburg its base stations, base station controllers, microwave radios, a short message service centre and a network management centre expansion.

North-West GSM is owned by the Russian telecommunications companies in St. Petersburg area, Telia of Sweden, Telenor of Norway and Telecom Finland.

In June, 1994, Nokia won the tender to supply North-West GSM network’s first phase deliveries. The network was opened into commercial use in December 7, 1994. Nokia is the sole supplier for North-West GSM.
