August 14, 1996
Nokia supplies PCS 1900 Digital Network Equipment for Western Wireless launching the next generation of digital wireless communication networks. Oregon becomes the sixth area in the nation to have personal communications services (PCS). Nokia has provided network infrastructure equipment, software and engineering services to Western Wireless as part of a $ 50 million supply agreement announced in December 1995. Nokia currently supplies GSM-based wireless infrastructure equipment to 49 operators in 30 countries around the world.
Nokia is also providing its 2190 PCS handsets to Western Wireless. The 2190 PCS handset is part of the award winning family of digital phones by Nokia, which are the most feature-rich wireless handsets available in the world today. Nokia has supplied handsets for Western Wireless’ PCS networks in Hawaii, Utah and New Mexico.
Western Wireless’ VoiceStream Wireless network is based on PCS1900 - a digital wireless technology which is compatible with the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) digital standard adopted by more than 20 million people in some 98 countries. Nokia built and optimized the VoiceStream Wireless network in Portland using PCS1900 base station radio equipment, software and engineering services. Currently service is available in the greater Portland and Salem metropolitan areas. In 1997, VoiceStream Wireless will extend service to central, coastal and southern Oregon and into Boise, Idaho.
VoiceStream Wireless is Western Wireless Corp.'s brand name for personal communications services (PCS). Based in Issaquah, Western Wireless is a leading provider of wireless communication services in the western United States. Its combined cellular (marketed under the Cellular One name) and PCS licenses cover about 25.5 million people and 41 percent of the land in the continental United States.
